Best Time to Visit Varanasi — Month by Month Guide

Mosaic Hostel · June 3, 2026

The standard advice is October to March. That is correct — but it is incomplete. Varanasi is a city that is alive year-round, and each season offers a genuinely different experience. Here is an honest month-by-month breakdown.

October — November: The Sweet Spot

The monsoon has ended, temperatures are dropping to a comfortable 20-28°C, and the city is building towards its festive season. Diwali falls in October or November, and in Varanasi, Diwali is a different event entirely — the ghats are lit with thousands of clay lamps, the river reflects the light, and the city is at its most atmospheric. Book accommodation well in advance if visiting around Diwali. Dev Deepawali (15 days after Diwali) is even more spectacular and less crowded.

December — January: Peak Season

The coolest months. Daytime temperatures sit between 12-22°C, mornings can be quite cold (5-8°C in January), and mist settles over the Ganga in the early morning — which makes the sunrise boat ride especially beautiful. This is the busiest time for tourism; accommodation fills up quickly and rates are at their highest. Book early. The cold is manageable with layers.

February — March: The Best Month

February and early March are arguably the best time to visit. Temperatures are rising to pleasant levels (18-28°C), the tourist rush has thinned out, and Holi falls in March — Varanasi’s Holi is one of the most famous in India, celebrated with particular intensity in the old city for several days. The last few days of February and the week of Holi are worth planning an entire trip around.

April — May: Shoulder Season

Temperatures climb toward 35-40°C and the sun is intense by midday. The number of foreign tourists drops significantly, which means more authentic interactions, lower accommodation rates, and a city that feels more local. Early morning and late evening are the times to be outside; midday is best spent inside with AC. Not the most comfortable visit, but a genuine one.

June — September: Monsoon

The monsoon arrives in June and lasts until September. Humidity is high, temperatures moderate (28-35°C), and the Ganga rises dramatically — sometimes flooding the lower ghats. The city takes on a different character: greener, quieter, more reflective. Boat rides become more dramatic. The lane flooding in the old city can be inconvenient but the dramatic skies and the reduced crowds make the monsoon Varanasi genuinely worth considering for adventurous travellers.

Key Festivals to Plan Around

The Bottom Line

If you can choose freely: late October for the festivals, or February for the best weather and Holi. If you are flexible on timing, avoid the peak of summer (April-May) but do not write off any month entirely — Varanasi is Varanasi year-round, and it always has something to give.
