Ganga Aarti in Varanasi: Assi Ghat vs Dashashwamedh
Summary
Varanasi has more than one Ganga Aarti. Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts the large, crowded evening ceremony; Assi Ghat has a smaller evening aarti and the Subah-e-Banaras morning ritual. Here is how to choose.
Two Ghats, Two Different Experiences
Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts the large evening Ganga Aarti that most visitors picture: priests in matched robes on raised platforms, lamps, incense, bells and chanting, with crowds on the steps and boats packed along the river. It is dramatic and photogenic, and it is busy.
Assi Ghat holds its own aarti in the evening, smaller and calmer, and the Subah-e-Banaras morning ritual at sunrise. Many travelers who stay near Assi prefer it because the crowds are lighter and the setting is more local. Our Assi Ghat guide covers the ghat itself.
What Time Is the Ganga Aarti?
The evening aarti is timed around sunset, so the start time moves through the year, earlier in winter and later in summer. As a rough guide, Dashashwamedh's ceremony starts shortly after sunset and runs for about 45 minutes. Published timings differ between sources, so confirm the current time with your hostel on the day.
The morning ritual at Assi Ghat is timed around sunrise. Check the start time locally if you plan to attend, and arrive early.
How to Watch at Dashashwamedh
- From the steps: free, but arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for a good view, as the ghat fills quickly.
- From a boat: you get an open view of the platforms and the river, but boats are crowded together. Agree the price and the pick-up point before you board.
- From a rooftop or terrace: quieter, but views and access vary. Ask locally.
Keep valuables close in the crowd, wear shoes you can slip on and off, and expect to stand for the whole ceremony. Our Varanasi safety guide has more on crowds and touts.
Getting There From Assi Ghat
Dashashwamedh is an easy auto-rickshaw ride from Assi Ghat, usually 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, and traffic near the ghat can be heavy in the evening. Plan your return before you go, or walk the ghats back if you have time. If you are deciding where to base yourself, see Assi Ghat vs Dashashwamedh.
Which Should You Choose?
If it is your first visit and you want the full spectacle, go to Dashashwamedh once. If you want a calmer evening, or a sunrise start that fits a short stay, use Assi Ghat. On a short trip, our 2-day itinerary shows where the aarti fits, and things to do in Varanasi has more ideas.
